European indices slip as chip shares and French politics weigh

Major European benchmarks closed lower, with reports pointing to weakness in chip stocks and political unrest in France, though one report described the DAX as edging higher.

European stock markets finished mostly lower on the day, according to reports, with the region's main benchmarks giving up modest ground. One report adds that stocks ended off their lows as oil fell, while French markets underperformed the broader region. A separate report described Germany's DAX 40 as edging up, so accounts of the session differ on the direction of that index.

Reports point to two main drivers. Several reports say concerns about AI investment hit chip stocks and industrials, with one report noting a slide in Asian markets that fed into European trading. Other reports cite political turmoil in France, with one saying unrest triggered de-risking and another noting that French bond yields stayed elevated.

By the numbers, the DAX 40 closed at 25,304.42, down 0.06% on the day. The CAC 40 ended at 7,838.49, a decline of 0.38%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 finished at 6,121.66, also down 0.38%. The STOXX Europe 600 closed at 638.64, lower by 0.14%.

For the year to date, the DAX 40 is up 3.32% and the STOXX Europe 600 is ahead 7.84%, while the Euro Stoxx 50 has gained 5.70% and the CAC 40 is down 3.82%. Headlines change quickly, and one day's move says little about the longer trend.
